Dog Nutrition and Pet Health Insurance

Just like humans, many dogs suffer from poor nutrition and obesity. Not feeding your dog properly can lead to several health issues. Obesity can lead to canine diabetes and problems with the heart, liver, and joints. Not only should you be eliminating table scraps from your dog’s diet, you need to ensure that the dog food you do feed him is full of vitamins and minerals to provide energy and promote healthy growth.

Providing your dog with the proper nutrients can mean a healthier dog and hopefully less trips to the vet and a cheaper pet insurance plan. There are six essential nutrients that every dog needs. The first is water. (Yes! Water is a nutrient!) Water makes up 60-70% of an adult dog’s body weight. Although pet food does contain water, a dog still needs fresh water available at all times. A 10% decrease in water can lead to serious illnesses and a 15% decrease can lead to death.

The next nutrient is protein. Proteins provide energy and are building blocks for cells, tissues, organs, enzymes, hormones, and antibodies. Chicken, lamb, beef, eggs, and fish are all good sources of protein. Protein can also be found in vegetables, cereals, and soy, but these sources do not contain ample amounts.

Carbohydrates also provide energy for the body. Fiber is one type of carbohydrate that will help your dog’s digestive system.

Fats give your dog twice as much energy as proteins or carbohydrates. Fats are needed to produce certain hormones and they are essential for cell structures. Fats also provide insulation and protect the organs. Fat is not produced in sufficient amounts by the body and therefore, must be a part of your dog’s diet. However, too much fat can lead to trouble, just like in humans. You need to carefully monitor how much fat is in your dog’s diet.

Vitamins are necessary for enzyme reactions. Vitamins are found in dog food and therefore, you shouldn’t give your dog vitamin supplements unless your veterinarian recommends that you do.

Lastly, minerals are important for healthy bone and teeth structure.

Now that you know what should be in your dog’s diet, you have to be aware of how much food you are feeding your dog. Obesity occurs when the dog is taking in more calories than energy it is using, and the body stores this as fat. Specific breeds, such as labs and pugs, are more prone to weight gain, as well as older dogs. You should be able to feel the backbone and ribs of a healthy dog and see a noticeable waist – otherwise you’ll need to check if your pet insurance covers obesity. Even after cutting back your dog’s food, he can still remain obese.

If your dog is obese, it’s important to talk to your vet about possible treatment methods. Essentially, the dog will need a better diet and more exercise. However, if the excessive weight has led to other ailments, now would be a good time to invest in dog insurance. Depending on the problem, medication and frequent trips to the vet will become common. Pet health insurance can cover many of these costs.

Protect Your Pet From Feline Urination Problems

Whilst some of the causes of feline urination problems are medical, others are behavioural. In either case, reputable pet health insurance should offer you financial protection from the costs of treatment.

If your cat has started urinating around the house, the first thing to do is to take them to the vet as they may have a urinary tract infection. If this is the problem then your vet will probably prescribe a course of antibiotics. However, if your vet gives your cat the all clear then you’ll need to consider other possible reasons for your cat’s reluctance to use its litter tray.

One cause might be the litter itself. Perfumed litters are designed for people not cats. Their aroma masks the unpleasant smell of cat urine, but can deter cats from using their litter trays at all. As cats have a strong sense of smell, concentrated, man-made scents in litter trays can deter their natural behaviour.

]]>

There are lots of different cat litters on the market including environmentally friendly brands that use recycled newspaper to create litter pellets. Some litters disintegrate quickly, sticking to your cat’s feet and getting trodden into your carpet. If you try a variety, you’re sure to find something suitable.

If your cat litter does not seem to be the problem, other possible causes include the location of the litter box and its size, shape, colour or design. All of these should be taken into account and changed if you think they could be leading to your cat’s urination habits.

Once you think you’ve identified the problem make sure you clean all of the cat urine from your carpet, otherwise the smell will encourage your cat to keep urinating in the same spot. Remarkably cat pee glows under a black light so you can shine one around your house to identify where there are traces of cat urine.

Punishing cats for urinating tends to do more harm than good. Your cat probably won’t understand what they’ve done wrong, but the feeling of stress caused by the punishment might make them more likely to urinate in inappropriate places.

Whether your cat’s urination problem is medical or behavioural, if it persists your pet insurance should be able to cover the cost of expert help. After a successful course of treatment, both your home and your cat should come up smelling of roses.

Owners Have Pet Health Options for Older Pets

Susan Mikels takes extra care to ensure her 12-year-old Siberian Huskey is in prime dog health.

“He’s a big dog, and he’s also my best friend,” Mikels told the Pocono Record of her dog who suffers from severe joint problems and painful arthritis.

“Every once in awhile he’ll have a little burst of energy lasting only for a minute or so, reminding me of his younger puppy days,” she told the news provider.

The Pocono Record reported that Mikels’ pooch has other dog health issues too, including vision problems and trouble walking.

“I see him struggling to get out of his bed, but then again, so do I,” she told the news source.

According to the news provider there are numerous things pet owners can do to keep their pets in optimum dog or cat health, such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regime and ensuring elderly pets sustain their body weight.

“Studies show that being overweight puts more stress on the heart and increases organ inflammation,” Dr. Jeremy Wentz of Barton Heights Veterinary Hospital told the news source.

Dr. Martha Franklin of Mountain View Animal Hospital in Scotrun told the news provider that owners ought to feed their older pets healthy pet food and try to limit the amount of table scraps.

“Each species has specific dietary needs that are provided within pet food,” she told the news source.

Franklin told the Poconoo Record that pet health insurance may also be a good idea and help with finances when a pet eventually needs medical attention.

“When shopping for (pet) insurance, ask a lot of questions,” Franklin told the news provider. “Insurance can also help with the expense of having important diagnostics done that might be skipped if paid out of pocket.

Wentz told the news provider that he agrees that pet care insurance is a good idea.

“Vet care is more expensive now because we are catching up to human medicine with diagnostic tools that we use,” he told the news source.

Franklin told the news provider aside from a healthy diet and getting insurance for pets, it is also important to exercise your pet.

“Swimming and frequent walks are ideal to maintain weight and healthy muscle tone,” Franklin told Poconorecord.com.

How to Choose a Pet

Many research studies have shown that having a pet can add years to your life. A pet is a friend, a companion and an unconditional lover. Some people have their preferences, but for those who don’t, these articles can help you decide what kind of pet you want, and give you tips for what you will need once you’ve decided.

1. Dog or Cat? Many people are already dog people or cat people and although these two species are different in their own ways, both give tons of love. Cats aren’t as reliant on people as dogs are, which can be good if you spend a lot of time away from home. You also have to work harder to win their affection than you do with pups, which explains the resentment many people feel towards these cuddly felines. Dogs are great if you hang out at home a lot, because they require walking and an alpha dog ??? to keep them in line.

2. Once you’ve decided what species, it’s time to choose a breed. As far as dogs go, certain breeds live longer than others, and have different temperaments. If you have a breed in mind, make sure to do some preliminary research on its health and manner.

3. Next, it’s time to decide whether you want to get your pet from a breeder or the animal shelter. Breeders are more expensive, but usually already have given the animal their shots, which can save you money if you don’t have pet health insurance. Shelters house many poor animals that need homes, and choosing your pet from here will save lives. Plus, these animals are almost always spayed or neutered, unless they are too young.

4. Training your pet is crucial. As soon as you take it home, you want to establish how it will go to the bathroom. For dogs the best way to do this is by crate training. Since dogs don’t defecate where they sleep, they will soon learn to go outside. Most cats already know about the litter box by the time they come home with you. For more complete training, enrolling your dog in a class may be a good idea if you want him to socialize with other doggies.

5. Your pet’s diet will keep it healthy. For dogs, you want to buy a kibble that has meat in it as a primary ingredient, since canines are carnivores. You can even feed him raw meat, but do some research before you start this method.

6. Pet health can often be expensive. From basic spaying or neutering to medication or surgery, you almost always need to take your pet to the vet sometime or another. To cut down on costs, you may want to investigate pet health insurance. Dog insurance can wind up saving you money in the long term, and with pet insurance covering all of the bills you will never feel reluctant to take your pet to the vet because of high bills.
With dog insurance or cat insurance, the proper food, toys, and training, your pet will be well on its way to being happy and healthy. The only other requirement is love. Your animal will give you plenty, so give it back; that’s the best way to keep your pet happy.

Dog Medical Insurance Taking Off

Admittedly, I have been a little behind the times when it comes to the recent talk of Pet Insurance that has been floating around. Dog and Cat Medical Insurance talk is taking off these days and I wonder, “Where have I been?” OK, my kitty seems fairly uninterested in all of the hullabaloo and he is pretty self-sufficient, as well, save for a stray flea here and there, but I am interested enough to get the facts.

So, what is the interest as of late?

Let me give you a bit of what has been talked about in the news lately. The negative news media folks tend to make it look like our precious Pets are being neglected and are always the first to go during economic troubles and that is not true at all. In fact, it seems that people have not been letting Fido and Fluffy go without and, in fact, have actually spent more on their pets, according to recent newscast and articles I have ferreted out, and that includes in the realm of Pet Health Care. Evidently, the California Governor thinks that people love their Pets as well, because he wants to tax them somehow when they are taken to the vet. Oh, brother, another way for government to get into our wallet, but that is an article for another day.

]]>

Dog and Cat Health Care have become a HUGE market in the last several years. In 2005 alone, over 5 million was spent on some form of pet health insurance. That figure rose to nearly 0 million last year, according to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association and is said to probably increase even more this year.

Staggering, isn’t it. There are even reports that many companies are offering Pet Insurance as part of a compensation package for new employees. Are you laughing yet? Maybe a bit, but I guarantee that as fond of your Pet that your family is, if you came home and told your significant other that fluffy is now covered with the family for medical cost, the kids, at least, would be happy. Heck, in South Africa did you know that Pets can now be classified “Officially” as members of the family and can be placed as dependents on their medical aids?

Whose laughing now?

It is all about peace of mind, really, isn’t it? Isn’t that the basis of most insurance? Peace of mind knowing that you could defray some cost in the case of some calamity.

So why the emphasis lately on Pet insurance. Well, as we become more affluent as a society, and we are no matter what the news media are telling you, we put more and more into the overall care of our Pets. I don’t believe that all of a sudden we care more about our Pets but that we can now do more for them in their time of need.

My biggest fear is that the Pet insurance industry does not seek to ruin standard Pet Care like the health industry has been affected by the health insurance industry by making it tougher and tougher to provide pretty decent care that is fairly affordable now.

I guess only time will tell, but I pray that Fido and Fluffy do not become scapegoats to the whims of yet another business conglomerate like the insurance industry.

Just like with us, it requires us to make sure that we are giving our pets the great care and do our best to make sure we are not neglecting our Pet’s health by thinking that we can just take them to the Vet for free.

I can’t imagine my life without my cat and I know it is the same for you. Our Pets are our family members and with that, we are given a great responsibility to take care of them.
